SEA President reprimanded over election

SEA President Gary Smith has been reprimanded and suspended for two weeks by the Association's Charge and Trial Board for violating election policies during his 2008 election campaign.

The Charge and Trial Board -- which is comprised of three members appointed by the Board of Directors to hear complaints from members and render decisions -- recommended yesterday that Mr. Smith receive a two-week suspension before his term expires in October. The Charge and Trial Board is empowered to reprimand, suspend or expel a member.

The petitioners, Randy Hunneyman and Stephen Foster, also were candidates in the 2008 presidential election. They alleged that Smith discriminated against them because he had access to and withheld from them specific member information that favored his election. In doing so, the Charge and Trial Board ruled, he violated the SEA's Board of Directors policy code of ethics and "acted in a manner that was detrimental to the association."

The Charge and Trial Board agreed with the allegations and ordered the suspension.

All parties have 20 days to review and appeal the decision to the SEA's Board of Directors.

The Charge and Trial Board Report is available here.
